Paradox May Be Teasing Europa Universalis V With “Project Caesar”

Paradox Interactive has officially announced that next week it will be releasing an entirely new grand strategy game, codenamed Project Caesar for the time being—and all signs point to it being Europa Universalis V.

Even though not a lot is known as of yet, already there is plenty of speculation circulating. Notably, the game’s first trailer will premiere exclusively on the official Europa Universalis YouTube channel, strongly hinting at a direct connection to the iconic strategy series. Meanwhile, “Project Caesar” is only a temporary title, but Paradox has referred to it as “a new era for grand strategy.”

The teaser tag for the project is “Be Ambitious”, which might be referencing the scope of the game—or Paradox’s ambitious agenda for its next big one.

What Project Caesar Might Be

If Project Caesar is not Europa Universalis V, the most likely alternative would be Ancient Rome once more. Paradox previously dabbled in this era with Imperator: Rome in 2019, although that did not quite compare to the success of the studio’s other grand strategy releases.

Despite that, hashtags like #GrandStrategy and #StrategyGaming indicate this will be in Paradox’s classic genre. Whether it’s a new IP or the next Europa Universalis game, expect the usual deep systems and historical simulation Paradox is well known for.

If it’s not EU5, most of us are speculating that maybe it’s some hybrid—whatever is close to Hearts of Iron IV, Victoria III, or Crusader Kings III but with a Roman flavor.

When & Where to Watch the Reveal

The official Project Caesar reveal trailer will go live on Thursday, May 8 at 12 PM ET, and is viewable only on the Europa Universalis YouTube channel. To date, there is no indication that the trailer will be viewable on other Paradox platforms.

A Critical Moment for Paradox

This news arrives at a pivotal time for Paradox. The firm has taken a bit of a pounding over the past couple of weeks, with Cities: Skylines 2‘s console release still hung up and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 moved from March to October 2025. A popular Project Caesar could just be what the company needs to get back in the black.

Whether it will end up being Europa Universalis V or something entirely different, everyone will be watching Paradox this Thursday. Watch this space!
