How To Use Torches In BG3

Baldur’s Gate 3 forces the player to consider how bright their surroundings are, as characters need light sources to see, as well as stealthing. You can’t hide in the bright light of day too easily. This is a D&D game after all, so you’re going to spend a lot of time in dungeons and dark environs. There are entire portions of the game set in the Underdark, for example.

The game makes it clear that you will have to rely on various light sources to make it through  Torches can be found in many different places in the gamer. They will often spawn inside barrels and trunks in different locations.

But if you see a bunch start spawning all in one area, that’s the game telling you to stock up. When will that happen? Let’s talk about it.

When do you use torches In BG3?

There are a few reasons why you need to use torches In BG3. The typical dungeon is pretty dark, and in D&D you will often find yourself lighting your way by relying on torchlight. There are also a few points in the story where you have to rely on torches and other light sources to get around. I won’t spoil too much, but be prepared to stock up on torches heading into Act 2, for example.

There are other ways to deal with darkness as well. You don’t always need torches to see in the dark, as abilities like Darkvision and Superior Darkvision can avoid this problem. You can get these via spells, and certain races also have the ability by default. The Daylight spell can also be a huge help here as well, especially in Act 2. There are other options as well. If you want to avoid the need for a torch in Baldur’s Gate 3, then use the Light Cantrip to get around it. You can find a ring that does this cantrip for free during Act 1, specifically in the Underdark. Certain classes also allow you to get this cantrip for free.

When you do need to use a torch, you need to swap to it. This light source will replace your main hand weapon, so keep that in mind. If you have a wizard or other caster that doesn’t need to make use of their main weapon all that often, they can be a good torch bearer. Here is how you can do it very quickly.

Doing this on PC is very easy. Hit I to open the inventory, then look in the bottom left of the equipment UI. The box above your weapon is the slot for your light source. Place a torch there to have it ready to use. When you’re outside the inventory UI, you can see a button underneath the weapon selections at the bottom of the screen. You can click that button to toggle your light source.

If you’re using a controller, there’s a bit more to it. If you ever need to equip your torch, hold Up on the D-Pad, and your character will switch their currently equipped weapon with their light source. If you hold Up again, you will switch back to your weapon.

Once you have your torch active, it will stay up until you swap it out. That is all you need to know about this.
