If you were ever told that you would not last ten minutes in a Modern Warfare 2 lobby, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 brings good news.
Activision has revealed details of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 AI-based chat filter, which the company hopes will curb the toxic behavior the franchise has become infamous for since the early Xbox Live days.
Gamer Skynet
AI-based voice moderation systems made their Call of Duty debut in 2023 with Modern Warfare 3. Activision has contracted the aptly named ToxMod software from Modulate to do the job.
ToxMod can cover up to 18 languages and tries to track the “language of love” Call of Duty players have been speaking for a little too long.
Activision so far only monitors messages in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, but it will expand this to French and German by the time Call of Duty: Black Ops 6comes out.

The Cost Of Call of Duty AI-Based Moderation Is Likely Steep
A look into the Modulate product page for ToxMod gives an idea of how much money goes into moderating harassment and hate speech in multiplayer servers.
The Mythic package, which allows ToxMod to analyze 200 thousand monthly hours of player audio and chat, costs $20,000 per month.
It is unclear what tier Activision has contracted for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, but it most likely is a custom deal to match its mammoth data set.
In addition to the audio, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will have the same text moderation tools used by Modern Warfare 3.
The Numbers, Mason
The latest Activision report, covering both Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone between June and October, shows a 67% reduction in repeat offenders among players who received moderation’s equivalent of a cease and desist over voice chat shenanigans.
The company also estimates that 43% fewer players have been exposed to toxic speech, though the absolute numbers remain a secret.

AI Is Catching A Lot Of Hate Speech For Activision
Activision did release numbers for its in-house text moderation solution though, and it paints a nice picture of the community: between November 2023 and October 2024, the filter caught over 45 million texts, or around a stunning 93 per minute.
Tighter moderation can only do good to Call of Duty, as it prepares to launch a Black Ops edition that is not ashamed to lean heavily into Cold War politics in its campaign, as is typical of this branch.
There are criticisms over the movement and gunplay, which are getting closer to Fortnite and Rainbow 6: Siege instead of its Call of Duty roots, but thanks to ToxMod, players will have to learn to articulate their feelings about the game without slurs.
