DualShockers Definitives: 10 Best Shooters Of 2023
DualShockers votes on the best shooters of the year (1st- and 3rd-person).
There’s a good mix of big-budget and indie shooters available on the platform, and you could spend days finding one that’s right for you. You won’t have to do that, though, as we’ve already created a diverse assortment for you.
While this list does feature all out shooters, there are also games that aren’t strictly shooters but have good shooting mechanics and gunplay. In short, there is a lot of variety for you to choose from.
10 The Outer Worlds
Superb Space RPG
Obsidian is considered by many to be a legendary developer, mostly because they are the minds behind Fallout: New Vegas. While New Vegas has not aged well, you can still see Obsidian’s RPG brilliance shine through in The Outer Worlds.
It’s a branching, choice-driven RPG that showcases the developer’s knack for world-building and storytelling. The game gives you engaging gunplay, interesting companions, and a narrative that changes based on your decisions.
You can use charisma to manipulate outcomes or just simply blast through enemies with sci-fi weapons. There’s plenty of freedom to explore different playstyles here, and RPG fans will feel right at home.
9 Deathloop
Time Bending Shooter
If you’re a fan of games that incorporate time travel, Deathloop is definitely a game worth trying. In this time-bending shooter, you’re trapped in a loop on a mysterious island, with the simple task of eliminating eight key targets in one day.
Of course, it’s not that simple. If you fail to eliminate all the targets in time or die before the day’s end, you start all over again. It’s sort of a puzzle in that respect, as you have to find a “loop” that works in your favor.
The game encourages you to experiment with different abilities, weapons, and approaches, making each run feel unique. You could try a stealthy approach or get into all-out gunfights. In short, there’s a lot of strategy and fast-paced action on offer here.
8 Neon White
A Shooter That Speedruns
Neon White is one of those games that will make you appreciate good game design. It’s a first-person shooter, deck builder, and speed running game all packed into one.
That sounds like a lot, but it all works wonderfully. The game is all about fast movement, as it has you pick up playing cards that serve as weapons for you to use.
These weapons also serve a mobility purpose. For example, you can use the pistol card to shoot enemies, but the card also represents a double jump. Similarly, the machine gun card can shoot a grenade that launches you across platforms.
Your goal? Sprint, double jump, and wall run across the map to complete the level as fast as possible. The story is a bit lackluster, but you won’t care about that when you’re trying to beat the leaderboard.

7 Deep Rock Galactic
Fun Mining Adventure
Deep Rock Galactic is a highly unique game that’s a heap of fun with friends. In this co-op shooter, you are a miner who explores procedurally generated caves to gather resources.
Of course, these caves are full of random threats and treasures. The game features destructible environments, unique class abilities, and unpredictable enemies that make each mission chaotic and completely random.
This randomness, of course, leads to endless shenanigans, which makes it the perfect game to play with friends. While battling alien hordes is fun, the downtime in between mining for resources is just as satisfying.
Simply put, it’s the perfect blend of teamwork, chaos, and comedy. It’s one of those games where even teaming up with strangers is still fun.
6 SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE
Stop Time, Shoot, Stop Time Again
Superhot: Mind Control is the third edition of the massively popular Superhot franchise. It builds on its predecessors, adding new enemies, generated environments, and roguelite elements.
For those unfamiliar, Superhot features a unique mechanic of slowing down time. Every time you stop moving, time slows down, allowing you to shoot, dodge bullets, or, better yet, smash the enemies with the back of your gun. But one stray shot and you are dead.
This enticing and thrilling game loop keeps you coming back for more. That’s one of the reasons the previous games were so fun, and Mind Control Delete is no exception.
5 Prey
Sci-Fi Horror Shooter
If you enjoy games like Alien: Isolation or Bioshock, you’ll likely appreciate Prey. Like the other two titles, Prey is an atmospheric horror game that features intelligent enemies and fantastic world-building.
Set aboard the Talos I space station, you need to battle shape-shifting aliens using a mix of firearms and unique abilities. However, the game is more methodical and doesn’t reward a guns-blazing approach.
The narrative and atmosphere are gripping, and the sound design is highly immersive. It encourages exploration and creativity in combat and features some choice-driven mechanics.
This game is incredibly polished, and it is one of the better immersive sims out there. If a sci-fi psychological thriller is what you’re looking for, Prey will scratch that itch for you.

10 Scariest Games Set in Space, Ranked
The vastness of space is terrifying yet enthralling. Here are some games that are living proof of this.
4 Titanfall 2
An OG Competitive Shooter
Titanfall 2 walked, so Apex Legends could run. It’s a multiplayer shooter filled with lethal action that asks you to constantly be on the move. The game features wall-running, fluid movement, and unique combat systems.
These elements are apparent in Apex Legends too, as both games were developed by Respawn. However, in Titanfall 2 the Titans are at the forefront of all the excitement. These are massive mech suits that offer devastating attacks and unique abilities.
With its fast-paced gameplay and a well-crafted single-player campaign that explores the bond between the pilot and Titan, Titanfall 2 is still a thrilling experience in 2024.
Just keep in mind that the multiplayer makes this one of the hardest FPS games out there.
3 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Realistic Tactical Shooter
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege has cemented its place in the world of tactical shooters. Compared to other big names in the genre like CS2 and VALORANT, Rainbow Six Siege offers more slow-paced and realistic gameplay.
Just rushing blind into objectives won’t work here, you have to be tactful, precise, and strategic. You have a variety of tools and gadgets at your disposal to achieve your objective. Use a drone for reconnaissance or proximity mines to secure areas; the choice is yours. Plus, the maps and environments are destructive, adding to the realism.
However, the game is not easy in any way. It’s one of the hardest tactical shooters out there, and that’s saying something.
2 Halo Infinite
Revival Of The Most Beloved Franchise
You can’t have a list of Xbox games without talking about Halo. The franchise has been around since 2001, and Halo Infinite is the latest installment in the series.
It’s also the first open-world Halo, which allows for more freedom in gameplay. The story itself is still largely linear, but you have more side missions and lore to uncover as you explore the vast Zeta Halo.
The single-player campaign is fantastic, but the multiplayer isn’t half-bad either. The gunplay is refined and satisfying, and there are a couple of things you’ll recognize if you’re familiar with the Halo franchise.
This is a game that old Xbox fans will enjoy. However, there’s plenty of meat on the bone for new players as well. The Game Pass allows access to the campaign, as the multiplayer part of the game is already free to play.
1 Doom Eternal
Satisfying Sci-Fi Shooter
Id Software has been around since 1993, and they’ve been dropping incredible games ever since. The original Doom is their most important creation and is widely regarded as one of the best games of all time.
The latest installment, DOOM Eternal, combines everything great about the previous games and turns the action up to 11. It features blazing-fast combat, enhanced movement mechanics, and plenty of new weapons and abilities.
The game features a new dash mechanic that allows you to move horizontally at high speed and the grappling hook adds some verticality to the gameplay. As such, the combat has a lot of depth to it, and it’s just as rewarding as it has ever been.
The best part is that you can jump into this title without having played any of the previous games. However, the rest of the franchise is also available on Game Pass if you’re interested.
